Let me be honest about something: there is a lot to be embarrassed about in the world of gay cinema. When same-sex love and relationships in movies is cheesy or stereotypical, it's especially embarrassing. Because not only is it bad, but then I wonder, "Oh no; is this how straight people think we roll?!"
I have, however, managed to come across a few quality gay movies. What's even better is that the ones I'm listing here are lesbian movies. Yes, you read that correctly: good lesbian movies.
If you've never ventured into the realm of non-pornographic sapphic cinema these movies would be a good place to start.
If you fancy something funny involving hospitals, a mother engaged in an affair that routinely talks shit in Chinese and a cute dancer, then check out Saving Face. It tickled me something good.
For stories set in boarding schools, full of drama and longing, peep Lost & Delirious and Loving Anabelle. Both are highly dramatic and bound to evoke a reaction, whether you like the way events unfold or not.
If you're in the mood for accents and different cultures, try Imagine Me & You, a British film starring Piper Perabo from Lost & Delirious, I Can't Think Straight or Fire. The latter two tackle elements of religion and tradition, in addition to woman-on woman love.
